The Bet Canvas Template

A one-page canvas for writing down a feature bet's user, pain, hypothesis, riskiest assumption, and kill criteria before you build it.

Purpose

Use this before investing heavily in a feature, workflow, AI capability, platform improvement, or technical change where uncertainty matters.

When to Use

  • The problem is important.
  • The solution is uncertain.
  • The effort is more than a small fix.
  • The work affects a customer journey, revenue path, reliability, or team leverage.

Hypothesis

  • Highest-Risk Assumption

  • Success Signal
  • Kill or Pivot Criteria
  • Scope Exclusions
  • Technical Risks
  • Rollout Plan
  • Next Decision

Review Date:

Fill only the fields that improve the decision for the work in front of you.

Compact Version

Use the compact version when the team needs a fast planning discussion rather than a full written brief. It carries the same fields as the full canvas above (Bet Name, Date, Owner, User, Pain, Current Workaround, Business Reason, Hypothesis, Highest-Risk Assumption, Smallest Responsible Test, Success Signal, Kill or Pivot Criteria, Scope Exclusions, Technical Risks, Rollout Plan, Next Decision, and Review Date), talked through out loud rather than written up in full.

Example Use

For a guided workspace setup bet, the team might define new workspace admins as the user, setup confusion as the pain, faster activation as the business reason, a flagged checklist as the smallest responsible test, setup completion within three days as the success signal, and no measurable improvement after two weeks as the kill criteria.

Key takeaways

  • Reach for the Bet Canvas when the problem matters, the solution is genuinely uncertain, and the work is bigger than a small fix.
  • The canvas forces a hypothesis, a highest-risk assumption, and a smallest responsible test into the open before anyone starts building.
  • Kill-or-pivot criteria belong on the canvas from the start, not invented after the bet has already failed.
  • The compact version exists so a bet can still get this discipline in a fast planning conversation, not only in a written brief.

Let's talk about what you're building.

In the age of AI

The advantage was never the model. It's knowing what to build with it — and having a team that can actually ship it.

That's the part I help with: finding where AI genuinely makes your business faster, deciding what's worth building, and standing behind it once it's live.

Four offices, one very full passport

Every dot on this map is a conversation I still remember.
